How to add manual fuel and gas data

Written by Tom Hallam

Just like with your electricity data, relying on raw usage numbers for your fuel and gas consumption gives you a highly accurate Scope 1 and 2 footprint. Because fuel prices fluctuate constantly, entering exact liters or kilowatt-hours is much more precise than using your total spend data.

Here is how to add your fuel and gas data into CarbonTrail.

What You Will Need

Before entering your data, make sure you have the following information gathered for the last 12 months:

  • For Transport Fuel: Fuel card reports or fleet summaries showing the total liters purchased (e.g., petrol, diesel, LPG, or jet fuel). You will need the totals categorized per month, per supplier.

  • For Gas: Invoices detailing the use of gases (e.g., natural gas for cooking, propane for welding, carbon dioxide for fizzy drinks, or refrigerant gas top-ups). You will need the totals categorized per month, per supplier.

Step-by-Step Guide

Because different types of fuel and gas are categorized differently, follow the steps below that match the type of data you are entering.

Adding General Gas Data (e.g., Carbon Dioxide, Propane, Refrigerants)

  1. Select your gas supplier from the list on the left side of the screen.

  2. Click on Use of Gas.

  3. Click Select an Activity and choose the specific gas provided by that supplier (e.g., carbon dioxide). Note that for this section, the values are in kilograms used/topped up.

  4. Enter your actual monthly usage totals into the form.

Adding Natural Gas (Stationary Combustion)

  1. Select your natural gas supplier from the left-hand list.

  2. Navigate to Stationary Combustion Fuel.

  3. Enter your natural gas monthly totals in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Adding Transport Fuel (e.g., Diesel, Petrol)

  1. Select your transport fuel supplier (e.g., Z Energy, McKeown, etc.) from the left-hand list.

  2. Click on the relevant fuel category, such as Transport Fuel, Diesel.

  3. Enter your total monthly fuel amounts.

Tip: You do not need to look for a save button! Your changes will save automatically when you click away or stop typing. Be sure to repeat these steps for each of the suppliers that provide you with fuel or gas.
