How to add manual waste data

Written by Tom Hallam

Adding your waste data into CarbonTrail is a crucial step in building a complete emissions profile. Different types of waste generate different amounts of emissions, so breaking down your waste by category helps ensure your footprint is as accurate as possible.

Here is how to gather and enter your waste data manually.

What You Will Need

Before entering your data, you will need to gather the total kilograms (kg) of waste collected at your business premises over the last 12 months.

You need this data categorized by month, by supplier, and separated into the following waste categories (as applicable to your business):

  • General waste

  • Paper

  • Garden waste

  • Food waste

  • Solid waste (e.g., from construction)

Don't know the exact kilograms? > Many suppliers include the total kilograms on their invoices. However, if you only know the size of the bins you are collecting into (in liters), we have you covered!

Use this handy guide from Wellington County Council to work it out:

Step-by-Step Guide

Once you have your totals calculated per month, per supplier, and per category, follow these steps to add them to the platform:

  1. Navigate to the Waste section in your data entry table.

  2. Locate your waste supplier from the list.

  3. For each specific waste category (e.g., General Waste, Paper), enter the total kilograms collected into the corresponding monthly fields.

    • Note: If you are using bin sizes instead of actual weights, make sure you apply the conversion rates from the article above entering the final kilogram values.

  4. Repeat this process for any other waste categories or suppliers your organization uses.

Your changes will automatically save as you enter the data into the table.
