Overview
We have updated CarbonTrail to incorporate the latest New Zealand emission factors from the Ministry for the Environment's Measuring emissions guide: 2025 and the 2025 Thinkstep Spend Emission Factors. This update ensures your activity and spend based carbon emission calculations remain accurate and compliant.
What's Changed
The 2025 emission factors represent the Ministry for the Environment and Thinkstep's annual review and update of activity and spend based emission factors for New Zealand organizations. These factors are derived from the latest available data to provide the most accurate carbon intensity values for various activities.
Key Updates in the 2025 Emission Based Factors:
Revised electricity grid emission factors reflecting New Zealand's changing energy mix
Updated fuel combustion factors based on the latest fuel quality data
Corrected non-municipal waste emission factors
Refined transport and freight emission factors
Key Updates in the 2025 Spend Based Factors:
Updated emission intensities per dollar spent across industry sectors
Air travel, natural gas, and coal have all increased emissions, likely due to increase post covid.
Electricity has decreased, due to decarbonization of the grid.
Petrol and diesel have also decreased.
Why This Update Matters
Comprehensive Coverage: Combined activity-based and spend-based approaches provide complete emissions visibility across all scopes
Accuracy: This update reflects New Zealand's evolving energy mix and industrial processes for more precise carbon calculations
Compliance: With the updated factors, we continue to prioritise meeting regulatory and reporting standards in GHG reporting.
Credibility: We are committed to using the highest quality and most accurate data available for our customers.
Where are the updated Emission Factors applied?
The 2025 New Zealand emission factors are now active in your software and will be automatically applied to all open reporting periods FY2025 and beyond. Any closed reporting periods or reporting periods before that date will remain the same.
The 2025 emission factors are sourced directly from 2025 Emissions Factors Workbook and Flat File (Published: June 2025)
