Why do we have priorities?

CarbonTrail automatically assigns priority levels to your expenses and entries to help you focus your efforts where they'll make the biggest impact on data quality and emissions accuracy. By tackling high-priority items first, you'll see the most significant improvements in your data quality.

The priority system helps you:

  • Focus your time effectively: Work on entries that will make the biggest difference first

  • Improve data quality: High-priority items often represent areas where better data is available, or that it will have a large impact on your inventory.

  • Maximise accuracy : Prioritising the right entries leads to more precise emissions calculations

Getting Started with Priorities

Head to a category page to begin reviewing your entries.

Step 1: Focus on High Priority entries first

Start with your high-priority entries, particularly:

  • Large fuel and energy purchases

  • Business travel expenses (flights and mileage)

  • Major freight and waste collection entries

You can improve entries by adding more data about the above items, either manually or using Emission Compass if it is enabled on your plan. We'll update the guidance on this page soon. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us if you have questions.

Step 2: Work Through Medium Priority

Once high-priority items are complete, move to medium-priority expenses, focusing on the top 20% of your remaining purchased goods and services.

Soon you'll be able to start engaging with your supply chain through CarbonTrail.

Step 3: Address Low Priority When Time Permits

Low-priority items can be tackled when you have additional time and resources, or when seeking to achieve maximum accuracy for reporting purposes.
